Ulver has a logo that says wolves evolve. They are correct. I finally accept that they were smart enough to know the first three albums were complete, they were all we needed to go from there–more so to each band that would follow in, and branch out from, their path. I have been fighting this conclusion, looking for a way to explain away the stylistic break that followed Nattens Madrigal. They distanced themselves from the Norwegian black metal label (understandably so), but also left behind that which made them an incarnation of a powerful, beautiful style of metal that would go on to inspire amazing bands to this day.
Nevertheless, they are the only band that I would both rank as the most important to me and the one I would never see live–they have disowned the part of them I love, and will be forever grateful for.
