Pretending

I’m reading George Eliot’s Silas Marner. Her writing, like Thackeray’s, amazes me. My mind cannot keep up with their distinctions. Even when I’m able to see them I can’t possibly describe them to others. And then I go back and read my own writing and realize how offensively pretentious it often is, like a sickly attempt at imitation.
