I’m listening to Opeth’s last album, as well as remembering having seen these songs live, amazed that fans can’t see the fundamental continuity between 1995’s Orchid and 2016’s Sorceress. I have always felt this way with great bands, I hate the argument that bands have lost their sound—as if sound were static. And yet now, for the first time, I also understand that the style matters too, that it is a defining part of their sound. That the critics are right to complain, to a degree. And now think of how brilliant the album (and title!) Watershed is.
