Slowing down to see the song

I am listening to “Torn Asunder”, the first track off of Khemmis’s first album, and decided to tap along to the drums on my practice pad. About halfway in I realized the underlying, amazingly powerful drive to the song doesn’t come from the drums as much as it comes from the overall songwriting. As a drummer, this is a revelation to me. And yet this should come as no surprise: I’ve always believed that the role of the drummer is to support the song, not dictate it. Even Neil Peart of Rush, as amazing as he is, knows this. His most signature parts would not exist apart from the song.
