I’ve been more disciplined about not only going to the dojo but really trying to open myself up to learning everything I can. One of the central ideas of Aikido is to blend and harmonize with your attacker. As a white belt there are still some basic techniques I do not know, including break falls. During one of the exercises tonight my partner did a quick move that I was not expecting to redirect my attack. I had no idea what to do but let him throw me. I remember letting go and trusting that he knew what he was doing, and I did a flying backwards break fall. It was amazing. Eventually I’ll learn how to do one properly, but I’m guessing that fundamental openness and receptivity will still be the foundation.
