Saving me from myself

I have been listening to Wolves in the Throne Room for longer than I can remember now, especially their 2nd and 3rd albums, “Two Hunters” and “Black Cascade”. Their first, “Diadem of 12 Stars”, I appreciate, and see the early genius, but it doesn’t call me back the way these two do.

I decided to play their fourth, and last truly black metal / nature metal album, “Celestial Lineage” tonight, and was struck with a moment of crisis. I now have to decide who is greater, Wolves in the Throne Room or Agalloch. I had forgotten how absurdly perfect “Celestial Lineage” was—on the level of Agalloch’s “The Mantle”.

I texted a metal friend whom I deeply trust, and he immediately (and characteristically gently) rebuked my stupidity:

I feel no such decision needs to be made. They are both awesome. Wolves fit when I’m thinking and writing. Agalloch for art, or just when it’s raining…

“Or just when it’s raining…”. Brilliant.

Let us all take a moment to be thankful for the people who save us from ourselves.
